Shok Paris
1/29/10 - The Breakfast Club - Cleveland, Ohio

Shok Paris headlined a benefit for the for The Help Hotline Crisis Center (A Suicide Prevention Service). Over $1200 was raised and Shok Paris tore through a blistering set! It is great to see the band back on stage, after so many years. Since The Breakfast Club (The Old Hi-Fi) was packed and there was NO room to move around, I slapped on the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye and got up close and personal. mashing my way against the stage! The Tamron 28-75 also performed well in this setting, with little lighting and ot much stage atmosphere.

Anvil, Eternal Legacy & Destructor
1/7/10 - House Of Blues - Cleveland, Ohio

My first show of 2010 at House of Blues just happend to be with Canadian metal monsters Anvil! Having recorded the band in the past and photographed them, I looked forward to this show for weeks! The Nikkor 35mm blazed and the Nikkor 10.5mm Fisheye is proving to give some very interesting perspecticve from "the pit." Of course, the Tammy 28-75 is a must. I think these are some of my best photos yet from House Of Blues!

Michael Stanley & The Resonators
12/26/09 - House Of Blues - Cleveland, Ohio

This was Michael And & Resonators 2nd show in as many weeks. The place was packed, which made moving around difficult. On Christmas eve, I bought the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens. Needless to say, I could not wait to get this lens in the pit at HOB. I have the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, but it doesn't work well in the pit. 50mm on the D90's DX body is just too much. The 35mm is PERFECT for this type of shooting. For only $200, this lens is sharper than the $400+ 50mm! My first outing with the 35mm tells me this lens will get a lot of use!

This is the first of two annual, end of the year shows that has become a Michael Stanley tradition. These two shows turned out to be my two favorite sets of photos of Michael and the band in 2009. Many of my best shots of this show came from the Nikkor 18-200.

My good friend of 20+ years, Bill Peters, is the metal god of Cleveland. His label, Auburn Records, has released first rate Cleveland metal for 25+ years! I slapped on the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and left it on for the entire show. This lens shines in smaller venues, with low lighting, like The Beachland.

I always look forward to Wish You Were Here's annual December show at the Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield. The theater has a great history and I always get some of my best photos there. See these galleries from 2008 and 2007. The Tamron 28-75f/2.8 really shined, as shown in this first photo, at 75mm.

Another fun show at Peabody's, featuring Auburn Recording Artists Lick The Blade and Eternal Legacy. I did photos for the CD artwork of both band's latest releases and had a good time shooting some live shots. The Tamron 28-75 f/ 2.8 is perfect for smaller clubs, such as Peabody's.

Starz - One of my favorite bands from my childhood. They have played Cleveland many times over the years, but I have always missed them, until now! The show was great and they ended with about 6 tunes from Coliseum Rock, my favorite release. Had fun jamming and shooting at the same time! Sadly, The Beachland is not one of the best stages, in terms of lighting and appearance. That curtain has got to go!

Lick The Blade - Full Gallery

Venomin James and Lick The Blade are two fine examples of great local metal bands. The Hi-Fi is a bare-bones stage, not visually appealing at all. I shot most of the show in B&W, to remove the background and add a club feel to the photos. I also messed around with some color settings of the D90. In settings like this, the fill flash of the SB-600 is valuable. "De-Fished" 10.5mm fisheye shots were shot about 6 inches away from the performers!

Wish You Were Here and House Of Blues in Cleveland. My favorite band to work with and my favorite venue to shoot in. What a great combo!!! I am still exploring the endless possibilities of the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye. as you can see if you visit the gallery link above. The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 performs very well at House Of Blues.

My second two-hour trip to Columbus in two days. As always, Wish You Were Here were stellar. Even after working humderds of shows with this band, in over a decade, they still amaze me. Their version of "Echoes" was so good, I found myself not taking photos, mezmorized into the groove. Great stuff. Great friends. Amazing band.

Columbia Reecording artist Boys Like Girls are doing very well with their second release, LOVE DRUNK. The LC in Columbus was completely sold out. The crowd was rabid. My photo pass was only for the 1st two songs. I slapped on the Nikkor 18-200 and hoped for the best. What I could have done if I could have shot the whole show...

MICHAEL STANLEY & THE RESONATORS
9/7/09 - Tower City Amphitheater
Cleveland, Ohio

Full Gallery

Michael's annual Tower City show has been a highlight of my summer shooting for many years. It is always such a pleasure to work with Michael and the band.

Tower City Amphitheater has some of the best concert lighting.
The stage is huge and with a good crowd, the place becomes electric.

The 18-200 Nikkor was the main beast and zoomed nicely over the high stage. The low light/high ISO performance of the D90 is spectactular and the Nikkor 18-200 is a great all-around lens.

The Kunite Classic is my favorite gig of the year. Hands down. I have been the staff photographer for Bill Viola Jr.'s event since 2002 and he just fantastic to work with. The diversity of the events, high level of talent, and fast-paced action always make for a very intersting set of photos. The Tamron 28-75 was my main beast, handling the low lighting of the venue perfectly. The Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 also was great

ABOUT ME:

I am a radio personality, photographer, live recording engineer, music lover, and photographer, living in the Cleveland Ohio area. I specialize in concert, sports, and event photography, with experience in wedding, promotional, portrait and medical photography.

I have worked in radio for 23 years and have been heard in over 40 states. A few of the stations I have worked for over the years include:
WNCX (Cleveland) *Rated #1 Persons 18-49
WIXV
(Savannah, GA) *Rated #1 Persons 25-49
WRQK (Canton, OH) *Rated #1 persons 18-49
WUJC (Cleveland), WZAT (Savannah, GA)
WONE (Akron),
and many others. I have also worked
for several radio networks, broadcasting on over 100 stations nationwide.
Click the radio link above for an audio archive.

I worked for seven years as a music writer for Scene Magazine in Cleveland and have been published in numerous other magazines. The media link will get you to some of my published articles and links to publications that have published my photos. I have recorded more than 100 live concerts, many for radio broadcasts. The media link will also take you to a page where you can download audio, including some complete shows!

I am turning the front page of this website into more of a photography blog, since photography has become my main focus over the last 3-5 years. I want to display photos that have never been published, recent photos, and talk of my experiences during gigs. I will still archive and display other media, such as radio audio (Prank calls, anyone?), but will focus on recent photo outings and getting all I can out of my new and expanding Nikon rig.

Hope you enjoy the new look! Free free to email with any comments or suggestions.

Joe
